With the inclusion of this warship in the naval fleet, India’s maritime warfare capability and self-reliant defense construction program will get a new strength. According to the Navy, the design of Mahendragiri has been prepared by the Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy.
Example of self-reliant India
It has been constructed by Mumbai based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. This warship is the latest iteration of the Indian Navy’s state-of-the-art stealth frigate class. This includes low radar detection, improved survivability, advanced automation and modern combat systems.
This enables it to conduct effective operations in all dimensions of maritime warfare. More than 75 percent indigenous materials and systems have been used in the warship. This is being considered a prime example of the success of the Self-reliant India campaign. Many micro, small and medium enterprises across the country have contributed in its construction, which has strengthened the defense industrial base and generated employment on a large scale.
Why was it named Mahendragiri?
Mahendragiri has been equipped with state-of-the-art indigenous weapons, sensors and electronic warfare systems. It is capable of effectively carrying out anti-submarine operations in the air, surface and sea. Apart from this, it is also prepared for maritime security, search and rescue operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations and long-term deployment in the Indian Ocean region and beyond.
This warship has been named after the famous Mahendragiri mountain range of the Eastern Ghats, which is considered a symbol of strength, patience and unwavering determination. This is the first warship of the Indian Navy to be named Mahendragiri. According to the Navy, this warship will be capable of handling active operational responsibilities as soon as it joins the fleet.
End dependence on foreign technology
The deployment of Mahendragiri holds special significance. Defense experts believe that this will strengthen India’s growing strategic role in the Indian Ocean region and its commitment towards a secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. This warship will play an important role in protecting the maritime interests of the country, security of sea routes and maintaining regional stability.
There was a time when India had to depend on foreign technology and designs for modern warships. Today the situation has changed. Mahendragiri is proof that India can not only build state-of-the-art warships but also has the capability to design them itself.
Capable of shooting down fighter planes
It remains invisible in the sea and proves fatal in war. Mahendragiri can move quietly in the sea, but is capable of delivering extremely lethal strikes when necessary. It has a great combination of speed and stamina. Modern Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system has been installed in this frigate. During normal patrols and long maritime deployments it can operate efficiently while saving fuel, while also achieving high speed with gas turbine power when required.
This is the reason why this warship is capable of conducting long range missions and conducting effective operations in various maritime conditions. The biggest feature of the warship is its multi-role capability. It can face many types of threats simultaneously. It is capable of shooting down enemy fighter planes.
More than 75 percent indigenous content
According to the Navy, more than 75 percent indigenous material has been used in Mahendragiri. This figure is not just a technical achievement but also tells the story of India’s defense self-reliance. Hundreds of micro, small and medium enterprises along with big defense companies across the country contributed in its construction. Many Indian industries provided equipment, systems, sensors, structural materials and other necessary components.
This process created employment opportunities for thousands of people and provided new strength to the defense manufacturing ecosystem of the country. According to the Navy, Mahendragiri is not designed only for war. It can also play an important role in humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations, search and rescue operations, maritime security patrols and international cooperation missions. Be it rescuing people stranded at sea, providing relief after a natural disaster or maintaining India’s presence in the Indian Ocean region, Mahendragiri is ready for every type of mission.
