New Delhi, July 10. Indian Railways has approved Rs 206 crore for installation of Kavach version 4.0 protection system on 680 route kilometers of feeder branch lines including Rewari-Delhi and Shakurbasti-Bathinda sections in Delhi Division of Northern Railway. This project is part of the drive by Indian Railways to expand indigenous armor protection systems on busy and strategically important railways across the country.

Automatic train protection system developed in India is ‘shield’

Kavach is an automatic train protection system developed in India, which helps prevent accidents like signal violation (SPAD) and train collisions. The system continuously monitors trains, applies brakes automatically when required, ensures safe operation at the prescribed maximum speed and maintains safe train operations even in adverse conditions such as dense fog.

According to Railways, with the implementation of Kavach 4.0 on these routes, railway security will be strengthened, operational efficiency and reliability will increase and operation of passenger and goods trains will be more safe and technology based.

Rs 175 crore project for additional homing facilities in Raipur diesel shed

Indian Railways has also approved a Rs 175 crore project to develop additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at Raipur High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Shed of South East Central Railway. Homing means attaching a locomotive to a designated loco shed where it is subjected to regular repairs, safety checks and maintenance.

Railways say that this project will strengthen the maintenance infrastructure in view of the growing electric locomotive fleet and increasing needs of passenger and freight transportation. Also, adequate capacity will be available at Raipur depot for future technical requirements.
