Demand to send Sonam Wangchuk back to Jantar Mantar, letter petition filed in Supreme Court

Tezzbuzz DeskThe case of removing social activist Sonam Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar to the hospital after 20 days of her fast has now reached the Supreme Court. Advocate Narendra Mishra has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court regarding this matter and requested to accept it for hearing as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

Questions have been raised on the action of Delhi Police in the letter petition. In this, there has been a demand to protect the fundamental rights of Sonam Wangchuk and other protesters. The petitioner says that peaceful protests are an important part of the democratic system and protection of citizens’ rights is necessary in such cases. The petition said that Sonam Wangchuk’s movement is not just a matter related to one person, but raises important issues related to lakhs of students and youth of the country. It mentions topics like alleged irregularities in the NEET exam, incidents of paper leaks, lack of transparency in government recruitment and entrance exams.

The letter claims that the future of a large number of students is being affected due to irregularities in the examination system. According to the petition, not only paper leaks but also such cases have come to light where questions related to the person taking the exam and the evaluation of the answer sheet have been raised. In all these cases, the need for fair investigation and transparent system has been stated. It has also been said in the petition that to maintain the confidence of the students, improvement in the examination system is necessary. It is the responsibility of the government and related institutions to ensure transparency in government jobs and educational entrance examinations.

It is noteworthy that Sonam Wangchuk was sitting on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for a long time. His movement was based on the demand for improvement in the education system and accountability in the examination process. After his health deteriorated during the fast, Delhi Police took him to the hospital for medical assistance. Police say that this step was taken in view of the advice of health experts and his deteriorating health condition. According to the administration, safety of life and health of any person is the primary responsibility.

At the same time, people and supporters associated with the movement have raised questions on the police action. He says that Sonam Wangchuk was protesting peacefully regarding her demands and her forced removal affects democratic rights. Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali J. Angmo had also raised questions on the process of taking him to the hospital. He had said that monitoring of health is important, but the consent of the family and their regular doctors should also be taken into account in decisions related to treatment.

Now the role of the Supreme Court has become important in this entire matter. Once the letter petition is accepted and the hearing begins, the court can decide how to strike a balance between the rights of the protesters and administrative action. At present, political and social debate is going on regarding Sonam Wangchuk movement, demand for examination reforms and the action of removal from Jantar Mantar. Now all eyes are on the possible hearing of the Supreme Court and further action.
