Loneliness is increasing in India, know easy ways to avoid it

Loneliness has become a major problem these days. Even if you ignore it, it can take a toll not only mentally but also physically. Many people are working in cities far from their hometowns, seeking a new life away from their families. While jobs are available, finding friends or people with whom you can discuss your daily routine is difficult. And this lack of friends and people is the reason for loneliness.

Every year, numerous studies on loneliness are conducted across the country and the world, and the results are shocking. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), loneliness can be as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Persistent loneliness can lead to depression, anxiety, and sleep problems.

Chronic loneliness activates inflammation and stress-promoting proteins in the body. This significantly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and weakened immune systems.

According to the LASI report, loneliness among both the elderly and young in India is due to modern lifestyles, nuclear families, and excessive screen time.
A global study published in June 2026 revealed shocking and worrying statistics about India. This global study ranked India as the second loneliest country in the world.

58% of Indians surveyed admitted to feeling lonely, while 34% felt socially isolated or disconnected from loved ones. 37% of people in India frequently experience sadness, the highest among the top five countries in this ranking.

This shows how loneliness is taking its toll on people. But how can we reduce it?

Try to connect with people.
Talk regularly with family, friends, or coworkers. Sharing even small things can increase emotional connection.

Participate in new activities.
Joining a club, sports group, yoga class, book group, or hobby can be a great way to meet new people.

Get outside every day.
Taking a short walk, going to the park, or spending time in a public place can help improve your mood.

Set a routine for yourself.
Make time for work, exercise, sleep, and favorite activities. Avoid being alone for long periods of time.

Build a good relationship with yourself.
Make alone time positive—like reading, learning, exercising, or learning a new skill.
