Congress protest at PM residence: Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and Priyanka Gandhi in police custody

New Delhi : Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former president Rahul Gandhi, party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and several other leaders staged a protest near the Prime Minister’s residence here on Tuesday demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the police use of force against students.

Later, the police detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and many other leaders and took them away in a bus. Priyanka Gandhi also protested while being seated in the bus. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also participated in this protest.

Actually, Rahul Gandhi had called upon those who want to get justice for the students to join this protest. Shortly after the dharna started, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh reached the spot and requested Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to end the dharna. Singh was also accompanied by Home Secretary Govind Mohan. Congress leaders sitting on a dharna near the Prime Minister’s residence ‘7 Lok Kalyan Marg’ raised slogans like ‘Prime Minister resign’, ‘Hooliganism will not work’ and ‘Give justice to students’.

Congress Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal, Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan, senior Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, Pawan Kheda and many other MPs are involved in this strike. Shortly after the protest started, the police detained Lok Sabha members Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Shashikant Senthil and many other leaders.

Congress leaders symbolically protested against the police action against the students by wearing handcuffs during the dharna.

Rahul Gandhi posted on ‘X’, “Attack on students is an attack on every Indian family. If Prime Minister Modi thinks that he can get away without answering, without facing any consequences, he will not be able to do so, certainly not this time. I appeal to every patriotic Indian who believes that our students should get justice, to join our protest in front of the Prime Minister’s residence.” He said that the voice of the students of India cannot be ignored.

He said, “We have marched to the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demand answers from him for the brutality meted out to young students yesterday. The government neither wants to take any responsibility for this incident nor wants to discuss it in Parliament. He said, “The Prime Minister and the Home Minister should resign for ruining the future of the youth of India.” Earlier, Rahul Gandhi, while talking to reporters in the Parliament complex, also demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. Priyanka Gandhi said, “We want to discuss in the House, but the opposition is not allowed to talk. This House belongs to those youth on whom the government is lathicharged and releasing tear gas shells. The children should be listened to and the resignation of the Education Minister should be taken. Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had reached Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and met the injured students.
