Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has made a scathing attack on the Modi government at the Center regarding the condition of the country’s education system and the performance of the students. In her article ‘An education system in collapse; the trauma of young India’ published in ‘The Hindu’ newspaper, Sonia Gandhi alleged that the Modi government is considering students demanding accountability and education reforms as ‘enemies of the country’ instead of considering them as deserving of the future. He said that the students are on the streets with their legitimate demands, but the government is responding to their courage with cowardice and cruelty.

Protesting students accused of police brutality

Sonia Gandhi further wrote that students across the country are protesting peacefully against exam paper leaks and the decline in the education system. Their demands are very clear – the government should fix its accountability and improve education. Referring to July 20, 2026, he alleged that Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) violently used lathi charge, tear gas and pellet guns to suppress the protesting students.

He said that many innocent students were injured in this violence. Taking aim at Home Minister Amit Shah, Sonia Gandhi said that the use of pellet gun must have got his approval. He said this is not the first incident of violence in this government. During the CAA-NRC protests in 2020, the police entered the university campus and women wrestlers were also misbehaved.

Modi Government has cut the share of school education by 50 percent and the share of higher education by 33 percent from its total budget. In the last 12 years, the government closed nearly 1 lakh government schools, while 43,000 private schools were opened. A large portion of these are run by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its affiliated organizations. He said that the central government as a whole does not invest as much money on government education as the families of the country spend on NEET coaching alone.

He raised questions on the National Testing Agency (NTA) and said that it has been centralized and privatized. NTA is short of employees and is running on private contractors. In this, politically connected people have been kept in the name of experts. The result was that in the last 12 years, 152 papers were leaked across the country, out of which 9 paper leaks took place during the tenure of NTA formed in 2017.

Lack of employment and shirking accountability
