America explodes tariff bomb on 17 countries including India, imposes 10% extra duty, calls force labor a major reason
Washington. America has announced the imposition of 10 percent duty on goods imported from 17 countries including India as part of its efforts to ban the import of goods manufactured through forced labour. This new fee will be effective from 12:01 am on Friday night.
According to the memorandum issued by US President Donald Trump, this decision has been taken with the aim of encouraging those countries to impose an effective ban on the import of goods made from bonded labor and for its strict implementation.
Earlier, America had proposed to impose 12.5 percent duty on India under Section 301 of the Trade Act. However, in view of the Indian government’s decision on June 14 to amend the foreign trade policy to ban the import of goods manufactured using bonded labour, the US reduced the proposed duty for India to 10 percent.
US Trade Representative (USTR) Jameson Greer announced new tariffs on a total of 60 countries under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. Of these, 10 percent duty has been imposed on 17 countries including India, Canada, Britain, Bangladesh and Pakistan, while the remaining 43 countries will have to face 12.5 percent duty.
America has clarified that the imposition of duty on raw materials which may affect domestic supply or those goods whose adequate production is not possible in America, will be exempted from this duty. Apart from this, products that cause disruption in the entire economy will also remain out of this scope.
According to USTR, this action has been taken against countries that have failed to establish and enforce effective bans on the import of goods made from forced labor. Greer said the move would help prevent human rights violations and protect the interests of global workers.
It is noteworthy that America is India’s second largest trading partner and the largest market for Indian exports. According to Commerce Department data, bilateral trade in goods between India and the US in the year 2025 will be approximately US $ 141 billion, of which India’s exports were worth US $ 87.3 billion.
