New Delhi. India has taken another important step towards strengthening its air defense capability. Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has launched indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. ‘Kusha’ First successful test of missile system. During the test, the missile proved its capability by destroying electronic targets flying at high speed and at high altitude with accuracy.
The Defense Ministry said that this test was done keeping in mind the real war-like conditions. The target was designed to represent an incoming air threat at high speed and altitude, which was successfully intercepted and destroyed by the ‘Kusha’ system.
Capable of dealing with many types of air threats
According to the ministry, ‘Kusha’ is a long-range air defense missile system, which has been developed to deal with various types of air threats. It is capable of hitting targets such as fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, unmanned aircraft (UAV), helicopters and large enemy military aircraft at long ranges and high altitudes.
The induction of this system will significantly enhance both the capability and response time of the Indian air defense network.
Rajnath Singh said historical achievement
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh while congratulating the DRDO team on the successful test said that the test flight of ‘Kusha’ is an important achievement for Indian defense research. He said that only a few countries in the world have the capability to develop such modern long-range surface-to-air missile systems.
He said that this success will further strengthen India’s air security and will help in reducing dependence on import of such systems in future.
Defense Secretary also congratulated the team
According to the Defense Ministry, Defense Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh monitored the entire process during the test. After the successful test, he congratulated the scientists, engineers and all other members associated with the project and described it as an important achievement in the field of indigenous defense technology.
Big step towards self-reliant defense sector
According to experts, the ‘Kusha’ missile system will further strengthen India’s multi-layered air defense network. Its successful testing has also made it clear that the country is now moving rapidly towards becoming self-reliant in the development of state-of-the-art long-range air defense systems. This will reduce dependence on foreign air defense systems in future and will give new strength to the operational capability of the Indian Armed Forces.
