Durga Khote was an educated actress

Durga Khote was born on 14 January 1905 in a prestigious and educated Konkani family of Mumbai. His childhood name was Vita Lad. In those times when girls’ education was stopped, Durga Khote obtained BA degree from St. Xavier’s College. She got married to Vishwanath Khote at an early age. Had two lovely sons Bakul and Harin. But fate had something else in store. Durga ji’s husband died suddenly at the age of just 26. The responsibility of his two younger sons Bakul and Harin fell upon him.

Durga Khote started struggling with financial problems

After the death of her husband, Durga Khote started struggling with financial crisis. Then she decided that she would act. However, relatives protested and the society taunted. But the actress did not give up. After making her debut in a silent film in 1931, she played the role of Queen Taramati in the 1932 film ‘Ayodhyacha Raja’. This film proved to be a huge hit and with it Durga Khote became a star overnight. She became the first successful female star of Indian cinema. She never bowed before any director or producer. The actress opened the way for her future generations by working in films in that era.

Durga Khote devastated by son’s demise

Durga Khote lost her son at the age of 40 to 42. After her husband, the loss of her young son proved to be the most painful for her. In his 50 years long career, he worked in more than 200 films. But who can forget his character in K Asif’s historical film ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ released in 1960? Durga Khote had breathed life into the role of Maharani Jodhabai, wife of Emperor Akbar and mother of Salim.

In her career, the actress also proved her acting prowess in films like ‘Anand’, ‘Bobby’, ‘Vidaai’ and ‘Karz’. For his incomparable contribution to Indian cinema, the Government of India honored him with Padmashree in 1968 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the biggest honor of Indian cinema, in 1983. He died on 22 September 1991 at the age of 86.
