Born in Harnaut village of Nalanda district of Bihar, Jhandu Kumar had a very difficult childhood. At the age of just five, polio affected his legs. After this he had to take the help of crutches to walk. Along with physical challenges, financial constraints also made his life very difficult. He started struggling from a young age to help his family. Sometimes he managed his household expenses by selling vegetables on the roadside and sometimes he worked as a labourer. When other sources of income ended during the Corona epidemic, he took up the responsibility of the family by driving an e-rickshaw. However, the financial crisis was so severe that later he had to sell his e-rickshaw also.
Amidst all these difficulties, Zandu did not give up his connection with sports. Initially he tried to make a career in athletics. He worked hard continuously in events like shot put, discus throw and javelin throw, but did not get the desired success. Seeing his physical strength and fitness during practice, a sports official from Bihar advised him to try his hand at para powerlifting. This advice proved to be the biggest turning point in his life. After this, Jhandu Kumar started training in powerlifting with full dedication. Despite limited resources, he left no stone unturned in his hard work. On the basis of continuous practice and excellent performance at the national level, he made it to the Indian team. His strength, technique and confidence made him one of the best para powerlifters in the country.
Now Jhandu Kumar is representing India in the men’s para powerlifting heavyweight event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The country expects a medal from him. For them, it is not just a competition, but the result of years of struggle, sacrifice and hard work. The player who once worked hard on the streets to earn two meals a day, will today enter the international stage with the dream of raising the tricolor flag high.
