Bangladesh: Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has resigned. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has accepted his resignation. Since the post of President is vacant, as per the Constitution, the Speaker will act as President until the new President assumes office. The speaker said that he was very ill. He resigned because due to the spread of several diseases, he is physically and mentally unable to perform the responsibility of an important constitutional post like President.

According to Bangladeshi outlet Pratham Aalo, according to Article 50 (3) of the Constitution, the President can resign through his signed letter sent to the Speaker and Article 54 says that if the post of the President is vacant or if he is unable to perform his duties due to absence, illness or any other reason, then the Speaker will act as the President until a new President is elected.

According to Article 123 (2) of the Constitution, if a post becomes vacant due to the death, resignation or removal of the President, a new President should be elected within the next 90 days. According to Article 48(1) of the Constitution, the President is elected by the votes of the members of Parliament.

Relevant sources had said yesterday that Mohammad Shahabuddin is mentally ready to resign. A source claimed that he had also informed about his readiness to leave after meeting senior Bangabhaban officials on Thursday.

Shahabuddin became President on April 24, 2023

On April 24, 2023, during the Awami League government, Mohammad Shahabuddin took charge as the 22nd President of the country for five years. According to this, his tenure was to end in April 2028. However, he resigned about two and a half years before the end of his term.

Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in a major coup in July 2024, there has been discussion and debate in the political arena about whether Mohammad Shahabuddin should continue as president.
