Kathmandu: Nepal government has officially approved the newly designed one rupee coins. A very big and shocking news is coming out regarding this new coin. On this new coin, the controversial political map of Nepal has been completely removed, in which the areas which gave rise to border dispute with India – Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani were shown as part of Nepal. At this place on the map, a beautiful picture of an ancient and famous monastery can now be seen.
What is the old border dispute between India and Nepal?
Let us tell you that Nepal has always claimed that Lipulekh and Kalapani are its territories, whereas India has been continuously making it clear that all these areas are completely a part of India. The then KP Sharma Oli government in Nepal had included all these areas including Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura in its official political map in May 2020, after which the diplomatic tension between the two countries had increased considerably.
Lo Gyakar Monastery’s picture will be printed on the new coin
This information has come to light quoting sources that the Council of Ministers of Nepal on Thursday itself has given the green signal to Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) to mint new coins of one rupee and two rupees with new design. Under this, the new political map of Nepal will be removed from the one rupee coin. According to sources, in place of the controversial map showing Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani, the picture of the famous ‘Lo Gyakar Math’ located in Marang village of Mustang district will be printed on the newly designed one rupee coin.
Nepal Communist Party strongly opposed the government’s decision
Lo Gyakar Monastery is considered to be one of the most ancient and historical monasteries of Nepal. However, it has also been made clear from Cabinet sources that the map already printed on the two rupee coin will remain in place. Despite this, senior Nepal Communist Party leader Bhim Rawal has strongly criticized the government’s move to remove the new political map from the one rupee coin. He has termed it as a very serious step taken directly against the territorial integrity of Nepal. Rawal has strongly demanded from the government and the ruling Rashtriya Swatantra Party to give immediate clarification on this entire matter to the people of the country.
Visibly angry Communist leaders termed it an ‘anti-national’ decision and said that if the government led by Prime Minister Balen Shah has indeed decided to remove the map of Nepal including Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani from the one rupee coin and replace it with the picture of Lo Gyakar Monastery, then it would be a huge betrayal of the country and a direct attack on territorial integrity.
Nepal’s Central Bank gave clarification, told the new form of coins
On the other hand, amidst all these political controversies, the official spokesperson of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Guru Prasad Paudel has come in front of the media and expressed his views. He clarified that this new design was proposed by the bank only with the aim of reducing the size and weight of the coins.
Giving information, the spokesperson said that after the new change, the weight of one rupee coin will be directly reduced from 4 grams to 3.2 grams, while the weight of two rupee coin will be reduced from 5 grams to 3.8 grams. Along with this, he also told that in making these coins, now strong steel will be used instead of the old alloy, due to which the color of these new coins will be shiny steel white instead of the old yellow.
