The killing of Jammu and Kashmir Police head constable, Ashiq Hussain Qureshi in a terrorist attack in Anantnag has emerged as the first major targeted attack in Kashmir since the Baisaran, Pahalgam attack of April 2025, raising fresh concerns about the security situation in the Valley despite sustained counter-terror operations.
The attack took place in broad daylight in a busy market area of Anantnag town, where Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi was on duty. According to officials, terrorists opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene. The sudden attack created panic among shopkeepers, commuters, and local residents. The injured policeman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Immediately after the incident, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, and CRPF launched a massive search operation. The area was cordoned off, checkpoints were established on all major roads, and surveillance footage from nearby cameras was collected as part of the investigation. Security forces also intensified searches across south Kashmir to trace those involved.
The killing has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders, security officials, and civil society, who described the attack as an attempt to disrupt peace and instil fear among the public.
The mortal remains of Ashiq Hussain Qureshi were later brought to his native village, where hundreds of mourners, including senior police officers, colleagues, local residents, and family members, gathered to pay their final respects. He was accorded full police honours before his burial. Emotional scenes were witnessed as his wife, children, parents, and relatives bid farewell to the fallen officer, who was remembered for his dedication and service.
The attack comes months after the Baisaran, Pahalgam terror attack, one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in recent years. In that incident, terrorists opened fire on tourists visiting the Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, killing several civilians and injuring many others. The attack drew nationwide condemnation and prompted a significant review of security arrangements across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in tourist destinations and along the routes of the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
Following the Baisaran attack, security agencies stepped up intelligence gathering, increased deployments in vulnerable areas, and expanded surveillance across the Valley. Despite these measures, the Anantnag attack has underscored the continuing threat posed by terrorist groups capable of carrying out targeted strikes against security personnel.
In the aftermath of the latest attack, security forces launched an intensified crackdown across Kashmir. Search operations and raids were conducted at multiple locations to identify terrorist associates and support networks. Security presence has also been enhanced in sensitive districts, with additional checkpoints and area domination exercises underway.
The incident also prompted a high-level security review involving senior officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, intelligence agencies, and civil administration. The meeting focused on strengthening intelligence coordination, improving response mechanisms, and reinforcing security measures in vulnerable areas.
Investigators are examining all aspects of the attack, including the involvement of local militant modules and cross-border handlers. Officials have reiterated that those responsible will be identified and brought to justice.
The killing serves as a reminder that while sustained counter-terror operations have significantly weakened militant networks over the years, the threat of targeted attacks persists. Security agencies remain on high alert, continuing coordinated operations to prevent further incidents and safeguard civilians as well as security personnel.
