‘Pradhan’s Resignation Is Just The Beginning’: Sonam Wangchuk After Hospital Discharge, Calls For Deeper Reforms

New Delhi: activist Sonam Wangchuk on Monday said that the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is only the beginning and stressed the need for deeper reforms in India’s education system.

Wangchuk made the remarks after being discharged from a hospital in Gurugram following health complications during his 26-day hunger strike linked to protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination system.

Education Reform Must Continue, Says Wangchuk

Speaking after visiting Rajghatwhere he paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, Wangchuk said that addressing the concerns raised by students could help create a stronger education system.

He said, “The resignation is just the beginning,” adding that if the issues surrounding education are properly acknowledged and resolved, the country can move towards a better future.

Wangchuk also expressed hope that ongoing discussions between stakeholders would lead to a positive outcome through mutual understanding and cooperation.

Pays Tribute to Gandhi After Ending Fast

Soon after his hospital discharge, Wangchuk visited Rajghat along with his wife. Gitanjali Angmo to honor Mahatma Gandhi.

He said he chose to visit the memorial to express gratitude for Gandhi’s principles of non-violence and peaceful protest. According to Wangchuk, the movement achieved results through patience, sacrifice and peaceful methods rather than confrontation.

Praises Peaceful Nature of Protest

Wangchuk congratulated participants of the movement and said the outcome was achieved without violence. He highlighted that the protest relied on appeals, dialogue and personal sacrifice.

He added that he and his colleagues had been following Gandhian methods in Ladakh for several years and were uncertain whether the approach would connect with people across the country.

Appeals for Democratic Expression

The activist urged citizens in India and around the world to raise their concerns through peaceful and democratic channels. He said solutions may take time but can emerge through dialogue and persistence.

The comments came after the conclusion of his prolonged hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, which was organized over demands related to examination reforms and alleged NEET-UG irregularities.
