The pace of filing of Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 is gradually picking up. of Income Tax Department According to information, more than 4 crore ITRs have been filed so far. The department has urged taxpayers to file ITR-1 and ITR-2 forms in time, without waiting for the deadline of 31 July 2026. Doing so will help avoid last-minute website overload (traffic), technical difficulties and unnecessary stress. In a post on the social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the Income Tax Department noted that over 4 crore ITRs have already been filed for the assessment year 2026-27 and the number is continuously increasing. Urging taxpayers to file returns early, the department advised them to complete the process early to avoid deadline stress.

Recently, on the occasion of 167th ‘Income Tax Day’, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed satisfaction over the record number of ITR filings and improved functioning of the Income Tax Department. He noted that after the implementation of ‘Income Tax Act, 2025’, the role of the department is not limited to tax collection only; So now the objectives of the department have also become to provide better service to taxpayers, increase transparency and ensure ‘ease of doing business’. The Finance Minister also appealed to the Income Tax Department to speed up the tax refund process. Timely returns will boost the confidence of taxpayers and strengthen people’s confidence in the tax system, he noted.

A new record for e-filing portal

The Finance Minister informed that the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal has also set a new record in the current ITR filing season. After improvements in computing capacity and bandwidth, the portal successfully handled more than 1 crore user transactions in a single day. On the busiest day, the number reached around 1.6 crore transactions. This shows that a large number of tax payers are now easily filing their ITR through online means.

Verification of most returns completed

According to the Finance Minister, over 3.2 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) had been filed till July 21. 94 percent of these returns have been verified while about 60 percent have been processed. This shows that the Income Tax Department is processing the returns faster than before. The Income Tax Department has also shown significant improvement in the matter of grievance redressal. During the financial year 2025-26, 94 per cent of the nearly 78,000 complaints received through the CPGRAMS portal were redressed. The average time taken for grievance redressal has come down from 57 days to 28 days; Interestingly, about two-thirds of complaints were redressed within three weeks. Additionally, 95 per cent of the nearly 3.5 lakh complaints registered on the ‘e-Nivaran’ platform have been redressed. Here too the average duration of grievance redressal has come down to 42 days.

The Income Tax Department has once again advised taxpayers to file their returns (ITRs) as soon as possible instead of waiting for the deadline. Timely filing of returns not only helps in avoiding technical difficulties, but also increases the chances of speedy processing and early receipt of tax refunds. As the July 31st deadline approaches, traffic on the portal is likely to increase in the coming days; Hence, early filing of returns is considered to be the best option.
