Anthropic is introducing a Claude AI watermark that embeds machine-readable marks into text generated by supported Claude models.
As per Anthropic, the supported Claude models will start embedding an invisible watermark in the text that they generate. The machine-readable mark is not supposed to be noticeable by the user and does not affect the semantics, quality, and aesthetics of the text.
The development of the feature follows the increased use of AI-generated content on the web and the growth of transparency regulations concerning synthetic content.
Claude AI Watermark Works Under the Hood
As per Anthropic, the supported Claude models released in the European Union on or after August 2, 2026, will support machine-readable marking starting from the release date. According to the company, the marking will work not only for users in Europe but worldwide where Claude is available.
The watermark is inserted directly into the text. Due to the fact that it belongs to the text, Anthropic states that the machine-readable mark will travel with the content in case the user copies and pastes the text somewhere else.
It is important to note that the watermark is not designed to make AI-written texts look different from the rest. While using Claude responses, one will not be able to see any noticeable difference in their appearance.
Where Does the Marking Apply
According to Anthropic, Claude is applied at the model level; thus, supported outputs can be marked irrespective of the product used.
The following products are included in the list of Anthropic products: Claude, Claude Platform/API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag. At the same time, the marking is applicable to supported models of Claude accessed through cloud providers (AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry).
Some of the file-based provenance features may be different depending on the platform.
Additionally, Anthropic seeks to introduce marking for models released before August 2, 2026. Older models are considered part of the transition period of the relevant EU framework.
Images and Files Receive a Different Marking
In addition to the text content, there is another category of content, which gets the marking from Anthropic.
If supported files (PNG, JPG, and SVG) are used, Claude can attach provenance metadata to them. Anthropic says this metadata follows the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) open standard.
Unlike the invisible text watermark, this approach records provenance information alongside the file. A valid signed metadata label can indicate that the file was processed by Claude and can help determine whether the file has been tampered with.
However, Anthropic recognizes that the metadata is not invulnerable. Changing the format of the file, taking a screenshot of the file, or even saving the file again might be enough to strip out the provenance data.
Anthropic Is Developing Detection Tools
Having the marking system would be useless without being able to detect it. Anthropic claims it will help users and third parties to detect both the embedded text watermark and file provenance metadata.
Anthropic will release more technical documentation about how the detection will be done.
That difference is crucial since the watermark is machine-readable and not human-readable. One who looks at a paragraph cannot simply see a distinctive sign or a hidden mark that says that Claude generated it.
A Watermark Does Not Prove Claude’s Authorship Of Everything
Anthropic is stressing one more significant restriction: detection of a Claude mark does not guarantee the original authorship of Claude over the underlying content.
For instance, a person may create the article on their own and ask Claude to edit, translate, summarize, or transform it in some way. As a result, it will receive a Claude mark while the original content was created by a human or another entity.
Also, the text may be altered or modified after being processed by Claude.
Thus, we should note that the Claude mark represents a provenance signal rather than proof of the original authorship.
Provenance Signal Might Be Lost as Well
There are restrictions in the other direction. It is impossible to conclude that the content was not created using artificial intelligence just because a Claude mark has not been detected.
According to Anthropic, detection may fail in case the text has been edited, paraphrased, translated, or merged with other pieces of writing. In addition, very short passages may have insufficient content for detection.

Files might lose their provenance information through operations like making a screenshot, conversion, or saving.
Content generated with older Claude versions, which do not have the ability to mark, may also produce content without the new watermark.
Why This Matters
The Anthropic technique shows a method of making AI provenance practical without changing anything in the way that the generated material appears to average users. With the growing difficulty of distinguishing AI-generated writing, images, and other digital content from content created by humans, machine-readable provenance could offer another signal for the system regarding where content has been processed.
Yet, Anthropic’s own warning serves to demonstrate why such solutions should not be considered reliable AI detection systems. The mark being detected proves the fact that the material had been processed by Claude, while the absence of the mark proves nothing.
Currently, the technology can be considered as an additional layer of transparency rather than a digital truth machine. It remains to see how well these marks will survive in the journey of content across the internet.
