The life of Altaf, a resident of Najibabad, Bijnor, is stuck between illness and financial crisis. To save her son's life, mother Sherunika even donated her kidney, but the transplant done in a private hospital in Mohali in October 2025 was not successful. When his condition worsened, the family took him to Chandigarh PGI, where he was discharged after being admitted for about 8 days.

Altaf has worked as a driver in Abu Dhabi for about 5 years. After pain and swelling in the leg, tests revealed kidney disease. After returning to India, doctors advised transplant. According to the family, the mother decided to donate her kidney. About Rs 7 lakh was spent in the transplant.
Even land had to be sold for treatment
Some time after the transplant, Altaf's health started deteriorating again and the transplanted kidney stopped working. He was brought to PGI in July 2026. Now dialysis is required every third day. If the number is not available for low cost dialysis in PGI, the family has to spend around Rs 3 thousand in an outside centre. According to the family, till now around Rs 9.5 lakh has been spent on the treatment. To meet the expenses one bigha of land also had to be sold. Altaf is unable to speak, so father Shahid is making arrangements for his care and treatment.

The health of Sherunika, who donated the kidney to her son, is also deteriorating now. According to the family, he suffers from stomach pain and intermittent fever. In such a situation, father Shahid has the responsibility of treating both his wife and son.
