Controversy has increased regarding the new rule related to parental consent for becoming candidates in Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections. All India Students Association (AISA) activists Ananya Raturi and Akshat Shikhar have moved the Delhi High Court on September 2 challenging the new affidavit issued by the DUSU election committee.
Now separate affidavits of students and parents in DUSU elections
According to AISA, under the new provision, students contesting DUSU elections will have to submit two separate affidavits. One affidavit will be from the candidate student and the other from his/her guardian.
The guardian's affidavit must declare that they are aware of their child contesting elections, give their permission to do so and also accept responsibility for his/her legal conduct during the elections.
Why parental consent on adult students? AISA question
AISA questioned this provision, saying that most of the students of Delhi University are adults and are legally capable of taking their own decisions. In such a situation, making parental permission mandatory for contesting elections raises questions on their autonomy.
The organization also claimed that the new affidavit reflects the perception of students' education and living expenses being borne by parents, while many students bear their own education and expenses.
Difficulties may increase for female students
AISA has also expressed concern about the potential impact of this rule on female students. The organization says that many girl students have to struggle for their freedom and rights within the family. In such a situation, making parental permission mandatory may become an additional obstacle to their participation in student politics.
The issue of bond of Rs 1 lakh also came up
AISA, while keeping in mind the provisions related to parental consent and bond of Rs 1 lakh, alleged that such rules could make DUSU elections more favorable to economically and politically influential candidates.
According to the organization, it had challenged the bond condition of Rs 1 lakh in the court last year. Now a petition has been filed on September 2 against the new provision of parental consent, demanding an immediate hearing.
