India has been confirmed as the new host for the maiden edition of the Women’s ICC Champions Trophy, which will be held in February 2027.
On Wednesday, the ICC confirmed the cities and dates that will host the Women’s ICC Champions Trophy 2027, which will be a six-team event, as opposed to an eight-team men’s tournament.
A few days ago, the ICC decided to move the tournament out of Sri Lanka, the original hosts, because of government interference in the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board, which also lost the hosting rights.
Currently, the SLC has an interim administration known as the Transformation Committee. It was established by the Sri Lankan government, and it looks upon the major board changes, including its constitution.
The ICC has always maintained that it doesn’t recognize politically appointed administrations. To make matters worse for themselves, the SLC has not sent any representatives to the ICC board meetings since the Transformation Committee was formed.
This is not the first time for SLC to be stripped of the rights to host a tournament due to government interference. In 2023, the ICC shifted the 2024 men’s Under-19 World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa because of the same reasons.
When and where is the Women’s ICC Champions Trophy 2027?
The inaugural edition of the Women’s ICC Champions Trophy will be hosted in Mumbai and Vadodara from February 14 to 28. The matches will be played across the Brabourne Stadium and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium.
Which teams have qualified for the Women’s ICC Champions Trophy 2027?
The six teams that will compete in the Women’s ICC Champions Trophy 2027 are India, Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.
What is the format of the Women’s ICC Champions Trophy 2027?
The Women’s ICC Champions Trophy 2027 will be played in T20 format, and it will be a six-team competition. The six nations will compete with each other in a single round-robin league, and the top two teams will clash in the final. There are no semi-finals since only six teams will feature in the league stage.
This is the first-ever time the ICC Champions Trophy is being held in women’s international cricket. Meanwhile, Australia are the reigning ICC Women’s T20 World Cup winners, while India are the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup title holders.
“The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 marks an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket,” Jay Shah, the ICC Chairman, said.
“As the inaugural edition of the tournament, it will bring together the best teams in the world in an intense, high-quality competition while creating even greater incentive for teams to continue rising through the rankings and competing for a place on the global stage,” Shah added in the ICC statement.
