Cyber ​​fraud network worth Rs 5600 crore busted in Kanpur, two arrested

Kanpur city. The Cyber ​​Crime Police of Kanpur Commissionerate has achieved great success in the campaign against cyber crime. Police have arrested two active members of an inter-state gang involved in cyber fraud across the country by allegedly misusing bank accounts of corporate and fake firms. According to the police, investigation has revealed financial transactions worth about Rs 5600 crore in 72 accounts of 14 banks in Kanpur city.

The arrested accused have been identified as Shahjev Waris (24), resident of Talaq Mahal, police station Bekanganj and Salman (31), resident of Haleem College, police station Chamanganj, Kanpur Nagar. Police have recovered Rs 65 lakh 26 thousand in cash, two Android mobile phones, three check books, two ATM cards, account opening forms, cash deposit-withdrawal receipts and documents related to GST and enterprise from their possession.

Allegation of fraud in the name of investment-

According to police interrogation, the gang members used to lure people in the name of investment for higher profits. Allegedly, the defrauded amount was deposited into the bank accounts of fake firms operating in Kanpur and other districts. The amount was then routed through various accounts and gaming platforms, thereby hiding the actual sequence of transactions. Police claim that after depositing huge amounts in the accounts, the cash was withdrawn from bank branches and invested in fake firms. In this way, a network of circulating the money obtained through cyber fraud was being operated at many levels.

Thousands of transactions a day

Investigation revealed that transactions worth crores of rupees took place in some bank accounts within just 3 to 7 days. According to the police, evidence has been found of more than 1000 transactions being done from an account in a single day. Examination of bank statements and transaction records has revealed approximately 600 pages of details.

When the police checked the bank accounts linked to the arrested accused on the National Cyber ​​Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), they found 86 cyber crime complaints from different states of the country linked to these accounts. The string of complaints is said to be linked to many states including Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Haryana.

Important digital evidence found in mobile

According to the police, investigation of the mobile phones of the accused has yielded alleged criminal call records, WhatsApp chats and other important digital material related to cyber crime. These are being considered important evidence in the investigation. During interrogation, the accused revealed the names of 7-8 other people associated with the gang. The police is now busy collecting evidence against them. Due to this, there is a possibility of arrest of more people associated with this network of cyber fraud in the coming days.

Transaction worth Rs 5600 crore increased the seriousness of the investigation

In the police investigation so far, financial transactions worth about Rs 5600 crore have been observed in 72 bank accounts. According to the police, this amount is an estimate of the alleged financial transactions that took place through the accounts; As the investigation progresses, detailed verification of the actual cyber fraud amount and role of the accused will be done.

In this case, a case has been registered in Cyber ​​Crime Police Station Kanpur Nagar under FIR No. 53/2026 under relevant sections of BNS and Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act. Apart from this, legal action has also been taken in Police Station Feelkhana under various sections under IPC No. 51/2026.

This action of Kanpur Police has once again brought to the fore the question of how to strengthen surveillance on the network of bank accounts and fake companies used in cyber fraud. Timely identification of accounts with suspicious transactions worth crores and billions of rupees and effective action against them remains a big challenge in preventing cyber crimes.
