Modi strengthened the Global South by getting permanent membership of African Union in G20!

In the 18th BRICS Summit being held at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, journalists from the world are giving their opinion on the role of India and the importance of the conference. Many journalists said that India has strongly presented the voice of the Global South to the world.

“I would like to start by saying that, if you remember, when India was chairing the G20 in 2023, it was Prime Minister Modi who had pushed the G20 to include the African Union as a permanent member,” Siyabonga Goodman, a journalist with The National Media Group in South Africa, told IANS on the BRICS summit.

So, from this perspective, I think as a South African and an African, I work from the perspective that India has really taken the lead in ensuring that communities and countries in the Global South become key partners in the multilateral community. But now, when it comes to BRICS and the talks that are taking place, at the moment, at the global level, we are talking about moving from a unipolar world. “Many of us look at BRICS as an institution.”

Speaking on bilateral trade between Nigeria and India, Odoh Innocent, Head of Diplomatic Desk at Nigeria’s Leadership Newspaper, said, “The bilateral trade between Nigeria and India has been very impressive.

A few years ago, we had about $27 billion of trade, but it has come down to about $14.9 billion now. But because we now have stronger relations with India, we are taking it back to the original 27 billion and above.
So, this BRICS summit has really given us more opportunities to engage with India and certainly other members of the BRICS bloc to explore that opportunity in different sectors of the economy.”

Alya Mohammed Obaid Ali Aldhanhani, senior journalist at Khaleej Times, spoke on UAE-India relations, India's growing role in BRICS and key expectations from the BRICS summit.

On India's growing role in BRICS and in the global economy, he said, “India's role in the BRICS summit has been amazing. They are hosting it and it is well organized, great hospitality. It is bringing all the leaders of the world to attend the BRICS summit.”

On India-UAE relations, he said, “It is a moment of great honor and pride to see His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the BRICS summit and we have a very long-standing relationship with India with investments, tourism and even businesses. So we have a very long-standing relationship with India.”

On the main goal of the BRICS summit, he said, “I think building more relationships in the area of business and building more engagement with the whole world and all countries, I think that is the main goal that we are looking at in the BRICS summit.”
