Even before the beginning of the festive season, the problems of air passengers seem to be increasing. According to the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), air fares on many domestic routes have increased by 50 to 100 percent. The organization has written a letter to the Union Civil Aviation Minister in this matter, demanding control over the fares of airline companies.
According to CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal, the prices of tickets which were earlier available at very low prices on some routes have now more than doubled. He says that its biggest impact is on middle class and upper middle class travelers going to their homes during festivals.
According to CTI, earlier the one-way fare on Delhi-Mumbai route was around Rs 10 thousand, which has now reached Rs 18 to 25 thousand. The fare of Delhi-Ahmedabad has increased from Rs 10-12 thousand to Rs 18-20 thousand and the fare of Delhi-Bangalore has increased from Rs 12-15 thousand to around Rs 30-35 thousand. It has been claimed that the fare on Delhi-Kolkata route has also increased from Rs 11 thousand to Rs 20 thousand. Goyal also said that IndiGo has increased the fare for infants aged between 3 days to 2 years from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000, even though separate seats are not available for infants.
CTI, citing data from aviation data agency OAG, said the capacity of domestic flights declined by 5.6 percent in September. According to the organization, IndiGo's capacity has decreased by 4.5 percent and Air India's capacity has decreased by 8.8 percent. CTI has demanded the government to increase monitoring of fares during the festive season and take necessary steps to provide relief to passengers.
