Phnom Penh. India has taken an important initiative towards humanitarian assistance and rehabilitation in Cambodia. Under the Quick Impact Project (QIP) scheme of the Government of India, the land cleared of landmines and unexploded ammunition has been handed over to the people of Kao Pao village in Koh Kong province of Cambodia. About 134 families will get direct benefits from this secured land.
Tanu Priya, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Indian Embassy in Cambodia, Y. NEARYNET and Cambodia Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) Deputy Secretary General Tep Kalyan were present.
Deputy Chief of Mission Dr Tanu Priya along with CMAA Deputy Secretary General Tep Kalyan and Deputy Governor of Koh Kong Province participated in the handing over of land cleared to the community under the Quick Impact Projects scheme of the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation, the Indian Embassy said in a post on the social media platform 'X'.

India has been helping Cambodia since the 1990s
India has been a long-standing partner in Cambodia's humanitarian demining efforts. According to the Indian Embassy, India has been providing capacity building and training as well as technical assistance, demining equipment and mine detection dogs to Cambodia since the early 1990s. Apart from this, India has also been providing assistance to the people affected by landmines.
This assistance from India is important at a time when the long-standing problem of landmines in Cambodia continues to pose a challenge to land, farming and livelihoods of the rural population. Clearing the land and returning it to the local community has not only increased security but also opened up new avenues of economic activity for the people.
Both countries agree on increasing trade
The scope of cooperation between India and Cambodia is not limited to humanitarian assistance only. Earlier on August 24, both the countries had also agreed to increase mutual trade.
During the third meeting of the Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment in Phnom Penh, the two countries discussed issues like traditional medicine, e-governance, recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia and strengthening the digital payment system.
