Sri Akal Takht Sahib on Sunday announced the expulsion of SGPC member and senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Amarjit Singh Chawla and Akal Takht Additional Head Granthi Malkit Singh from the Sikh Panth over separate allegations involving violations of Sikh religious principles.
The decisions were taken at a meeting of the five Sikh high priests held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib under the leadership of officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj.

In the first resolution concerning SGPC member and SAD Senior Vice President Amarjit Singh Chawla, the Sikh high priests decided that he would remain expelled from the Sikh Panth until he is acquitted of the charges framed against him.
The Sikh Sangat was directed not to deal with Chawla in any manner or maintain any relations with him during this period.
Chawla has been accused by a Bahrain-based woman of rape, abduction and other offences, and an FIR has already been registered in connection with the allegations.
Chawla was not arrested in the case and subsequently left the country. He is said to have gone to Canada.
The Sikh clergy further decided that Chawla would remain expelled from the Sikh Panth until he personally appears before Sri Akal Takht Sahib and clears himself of the allegations against him.
The resolution directed the Sikh Sangat not to maintain any association with him.
In a separate 'mother'the five Sikh high priests considered the case involving Malkit Singh, Additional Head Granthi of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
The same Bahrain-based woman had allegedly accused Malkit Singh of sending obscene messages to her through WhatsApp.
According to the resolution, Malkit Singh had been serving in an important and responsible religious position while wearing the Sikh religious attire. The matter was taken seriously in view of the responsibilities and maryada attached to such a position.
The SGPC had earlier relieved Malkit Singh of his duties following departmental proceedings.
The resolution observed that when a Sikh holding a responsible religious position is relieved of his duties, Sikh principles require him to accept the decision with humility and remain within the discipline of the Guru.
Taking a serious view of the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the matter, the Sikh clergy ordered Malkit Singh's expulsion from the Sikh Panth.
The Sikh Sangat was also directed not to maintain any association with him.
Both resolutions bear the signatures of the five Sikh high priests, including Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, officiating Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib; Giani Kewal Singh, Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib; Giani Gurmukh Singh, Granthi of Sri Akal Takht Sahib; Tek Singh, Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo; and Mangal Singh, Panj Piyara of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
