Mumbai: Mumbai's Powai Police has registered an FIR in connection with the suicide in the hostel of Sahil Wakode, a 20-year-old student of the Energy Science Department of IIT Bombay. This complaint was filed by the student's father Ravindra Chakradhar Wakode on September 19, 2026 at around 1:39 pm. Sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(c) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act along with relevant sections of the Indian Judicial Code have been imposed in the case. Professor used caste based abuses
The FIR has been complained against faculty member Suryanarayan Dulla, his senior officers and other concerned officials of the institute. According to his father, Sahil had taken admission in IIT Bombay in 2024-25 after passing 12th from Yavatmal. He was studying in the second year and lived in a hostel. The family alleges that for the last three months, Professor Dulla allegedly used caste based abuses and also threatened to implicate him in a false case. The father had explained to the son and encouraged him.
Phone call came on 18th September
On September 18, around 8 am, the family got a call from IIT and were asked to reach the hostel immediately. The police also informed that Sahil had committed suicide, after which the family reached Mumbai from Yavatmal on 19 September. The father alleged that the professor forced him to commit suicide by mentally harassing him.
According to reports, Sahil was caught with a mobile phone during the examination on Friday. It is alleged that he had uploaded the question paper on the AI platform. After this he was found dead in the hostel room. This is said to be the third such incident on the campus in six months.
Demand raised for arrest
Let us tell you, after the incident, the family initially refused to take the body and demanded arrest. The body was handed over after assurance from senior officials and the case being handed over to the Crime Branch. Students also protested demanding accountability and transparency from the administration. The allegations are being fully investigated in the police investigation.
