Assam’s healthcare infrastructure set to undergo transformation: CM Sarma

Guwahati(Assam): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday highlighted the state government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and medical education, saying the ongoing expansion aims to improve access to quality healthcare and build a stronger healthcare workforce across the state.

In a social media post, Sarma said the transformation of Assam’s healthcare sector extends beyond the construction of hospitals and is focused on improving lives through enhanced healthcare access, modern medical education and the development of skilled medical professionals.

The Chief Minister said the state is witnessing a significant expansion of medical infrastructure, with several medical colleges and associated healthcare facilities under development across multiple districts.

According to information shared by Sarma, 11 new medical college campuses are currently under construction at an estimated cost of ₹8,233 crore. Of these, five campuses are expected to be completed by 2026. Six hospitals linked to the new institutions have already achieved more than 80 per cent physical progress, while work on five additional hospitals is underway. Four more projects are also in the pipeline.

Sarma said the government’s objective is to ensure that improved healthcare facilities and medical education opportunities reach all districts of the state.

He noted that the expansion would help address regional disparities in healthcare access and strengthen Assam’s capacity to respond to future public health challenges.

The Chief Minister also emphasized that the ongoing initiatives would contribute to the creation of a larger pool of doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals, reducing the state’s dependence on other regions for specialized medical services and medical education.

Over the past few years, Assam has emerged as one of the fastest-growing states in terms of medical education infrastructure. The state government has launched an ambitious program to establish medical colleges across nearly every district, significantly increasing the number of MBBS seats and healthcare institutions.

The expansion complements existing tertiary healthcare facilities, including All India Institute of Medical Sciences Guwahati and several government medical colleges that have strengthened advanced healthcare services in the state.

According to the state government, these investments are expected to play a key role in improving the availability of affordable and quality healthcare while supporting Assam’s long-term socio-economic development.
