Assistant Commandant was given last farewell with state honours, people paid tribute with tearful eyes.

Ankit Kumar Pandey, the Red Assistant Commandant of the district, who was martyred in the firing at the CISF camp in Basoli in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, merged into Panchtatva on Thursday. He was cremated with full state honors at Sahajaura Ghat of the sacred Saryu river in Iltifatganj. Thousands of people gathered for the last journey. Every eye was moist and there was only one slogan on every tongue – Long live Martyr Ankit Pandey.

As soon as the mortal remains of Ankit, resident of Daulatpur Eksara Mathia village of Ibrahimpur police station area, reached his ancestral village on Thursday morning, there was chaos. The entire village was shaken by the screams of mother Pramila Devi, wife Priyanka and six sisters. Thousands of people gathered in the village for the last darshan.

When the mortal remains reached the village, people welcomed the martyr with flowers and garlands. After this, the body wrapped in the tricolor left for Saryu coast as a last journey. There was a queue of people for several kilometers from the house to the cremation ground.

CISF battalion soldiers posted at NTPC Tanda at Saryu Ghat in Iltifatganj saluted martyr Ankit. After the guard of honour, he was cremated with state honours. The funeral pyre was lit by his family members. During this, the eyes of every person present there became moist.

How did such a big incident happen?

On Tuesday evening, around 7.30 pm, there was an altercation over some issue between the soldiers in the CISF camp guarding the hydroelectric project in Basoli, Kathua. It is alleged that in anger a head constable fired at his colleagues with his official rifle. In this incident, four soldiers including Assistant Commandant Ankit Pandey, Sub Inspector Laxman Singh died on the spot.

Ankit was a promising officer

Martyr Ankit Kumar Pandey was a very promising officer. In the year 2017, he was recruited as Sub Inspector in CISF. With his hard work, he passed the departmental examination in 2021 and obtained the post of Assistant Commandant. He was posted in Jammu and Kashmir for about a year.

A mountain of sorrow fell on the family

Ankit was the only son of his parents. Father Shiv Prakash Pandey is a retired teacher. Mother Pramila Devi is a housewife. He has six sisters and wife Priyanka. The entire family is shocked by the martyrdom of the only son of the family, Ankit. The people of the village say that Ankit was promising and had patriotic feelings since childhood.

To pay tribute to the martyr, former MP Ritesh Pandey, District Panchayat President Shyam Sundar alias Sadhu Verma, former BJP District President Kapil Dev Verma, BSP leader Vinay Pathak, Deputy SP Pradeep Singh Chandel, all the public representatives of the district, administrative officers and thousands of villagers were present on the banks of Saryu.
