According to the report, when Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) asked Babar Azam to captain the Test team against West Indies, Babar put a big condition before the PCB. It is being told that Babar put a condition before the board that he will captain the Test team only if he is given the command of all three formats. If the board had accepted Babar’s condition, then Shaheen Shah could soon snatch the ODI captaincy from Afridi.

Babar wants captaincy of all three formats

According to a report in Telecom Asia Sport, two selectors met Babar before the announcement of the Test captain on July 5 as they had no other option other than Babar to captain the Test team. Babar accepted this role on the condition of getting captaincy in the remaining two formats also.

According to the report, Babar always wanted to become the sole captain of Pakistan in all three formats. Before becoming the Test captain, Babar Azam set the condition of being made the captain of all three formats. In response, the selectors said that if the team does well in the five Test matches in West Indies and England, then he will be given the captaincy of all formats.

Captaincy will be snatched from Shaheen

At present, fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi is the captain of the ODI team. Shaheen’s performance as captain has been disappointing. In 2024, he was removed as T20 captain after a poor series against New Zealand. At present Salman Ali Aga is the captain of T20 format.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) waited two months before removing Shan Masood as Test captain. Since December 2023, Masood captained Pakistan in 16 Test matches. In this, Pakistan had to face defeat in 12 matches.

Salman refused test captaincy

The selectors had approached Salman Aga for Test captaincy, but he refused to take the responsibility. He is struggling as T20 captain. The team and his individual performance were not good in the T20 World Cup and Asia Cup played in T20 format in February-March this year.
