Dhaka (Bangladesh). Bangladesh High Court has granted bail to the country’s prominent and young Hindu saint Chinmay Krishna Das Brahmachari in two out of four cases. Brahmachari has been in jail for almost 20 months. Many countries including India have expressed strong protest over his arrest. Chinmay’s lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya confirmed the bail. Bhattacharya said that a total of six cases are registered against Chinmay. So far, bail has been granted in four cases.
A High Court bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the bail order late Sunday evening, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. However, he will not be immediately released from judicial custody because he has not yet secured bail in two cases, lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya said.
Bhattacharya said six cases have been filed against his client, Hindu saint Chinmoy, including a murder case related to the death of lawyer Saiful Islam in Chittagong.
He added that a High Court stay on Chinmoy’s bail in the sedition case filed against him for allegedly insulting the national flag is still in effect. The petitions for the two cases in which he is awaiting bail are scheduled for hearing on August 16.
Chinmoy Brahmachari was arrested on November 25, 2024, in Dhaka on charges of sedition for allegedly insulting the national flag. He has been behind bars since then.
