BAT-BMS: Big action of the government: Remove Chinese mobile apps that stop the operation of e-rickshaws on the roads.
Knews Desk- Big step by central government: An order has been issued to remove two Chinese mobile apps like BAT-BMS and Epoch Li-ion from Google Play Store and Apple App Store. It is being told that through these apps, there was the ability to remotely control and stop the e-rickshaws running on the roads, which was posing a serious threat to road safety. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the government has taken action against these apps and given instructions to remove them from the platforms.
Taking this matter seriously, the government directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to take immediate action, after which the process of removing both the apps has been started. However, till the time of writing the news, these apps were said to be available for download on some platforms.
What is the whole matter?
This whole matter came into discussion after some videos went viral on social media. In these videos it was claimed that e-rickshaws can be stopped by remote control through BAT-BMS app. Some people also said that anyone can stop any e-rickshaw remotely with the help of this app. After these claims came to light, the matter quickly escalated and questions regarding security started being raised.
Big disclosure regarding cyber security
According to cyber experts, the BMS (Battery Management System) unit used in these e-rickshaws is actually an electronic system that manages the battery, which, being very cheap, is often deprived of essential safety features. Experts say that Bluetooth connectivity in these often remains open or without strong security protocols, due to which any unauthorized person can easily connect to it.
For this reason, if any outsider gets access to it, he can remotely control the battery system and suddenly turn off the power. In such a situation, the engine of the moving e-rickshaw may suddenly stop, due to which the vehicle may go out of control and become a victim of a road accident. Experts believe that this technical flaw can pose a serious threat to passengers and other people on the road and hence strong cyber security is necessary in such systems.
Experts also expressed concern
Cyber expert Sakshar Duggal had also expressed his concern on this matter. He called it an issue of cyber security. Said that India’s EV sector has been investing a lot for two to two and a half years. The eyes of the whole world are on India. But we also have to understand that the EV sector is still new. Gradually as things progress, challenges will also increase.
