Battle for 7 seats of Ballia in 2027, who will have the upper hand between BJP and SP?

The political contest regarding the 2027 assembly elections in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh is becoming interesting. There is a possibility of a tough contest between Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on seven seats in the district. In 2012, SP won five seats, in 2017, BJP won five seats, while in 2022, SP returned with three seats. The assembly constituency-wise lead in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has created a new challenge for both the parties.

Narad Rai's entry into BJP in Ballia Nagar, leadership crisis facing BSP due to the death of Umashankar Singh in Rasra and Ketki Singh's position in Bansdih can affect the electoral equation. In such a situation, in 2027, BJP will have a challenge to increase its influence in the district and SP will have a challenge to convert its lead into victory.

Ballia's seven assembly seats are spread across three Lok Sabha constituencies. Bairia, Ballia Nagar and Phephna are included in Ballia Lok Sabha constituency, Belthara Road, Sikandarpur and Bansdih are included in Salempur, while Rasra is included in Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency. In 2012, SP won five seats. In 2017, BJP captured five seats. In 2022, SP got three seats, BJP got two seats and BSP and SubhaSP got one seat each. The results show that the influence of the candidate and the alliance is also decisive in Ballia.

Bairia: SP's lead, BJP's challenge

In 2012, SP's Jaiprakash Anchal won, in 2017, BJP's Surendra Singh and again in 2022, Jaiprakash Anchal won. In 2024, SP got a lead of 6,248 votes here. In 2027, BJP will face the challenge of erasing this lead of SP and re-establishing its influence on the seat.

Ballia Nagar: BJP hopes from Narad Rai

In 2012, SP's Narad Rai won, in 2017, BJP's Anand Swaroop Shukla and in 2022, BJP's Dayashankar Singh won. Dayashankar Singh defeated Narad Rai by 26,239 votes. In 2024, BJP got a lead of 5,682 votes. With Narad Rai joining BJP, the party can get the benefit of his personal influence. BJP will face the challenge of connecting its supporters with the party, while SP will have to strengthen its position on this seat.

Bansdih: Challenge of repetition in front of Ketki Singh

In 2012 and 2017, SP's Ram Govind Chaudhary won, while in 2022, BJP's Ketki Singh defeated him. In 2024, BJP got a lead of 8,600 votes. However, there has also been discussion of resentment regarding Ketki Singh at the local level. In 2027, the challenge for BJP will be to repeat the victory and for SP to regain its old influence.

Fafna: Sangram Yadav vs Upendra Tiwari

BJP's Upendra Tiwari won in 2012 and 2017, while in 2022, SP's Sangram Singh Yadav defeated him. In 2024, SP got a lead of 3,398 votes. Upendra Tiwari's activism is considered important in strengthening the BJP organization. In 2027, SP will face the challenge of saving its seat and BJP will face the challenge of making a comeback through Upendra Tiwari.

Sikandarpur: Test of alliance instead of SubhaSP

In 2012, Ziauddin Rizvi of SP, Sanjay Yadav of BJP won in 2017 and Rizvi won again in 2022. In 2024, SP got a lead of 7,380 votes. The equations have changed after SubhaSP came out of SP alliance and joined NDA. BJP and SubhaSP will face the challenge of retaining the old support in favor of the new alliance, while SP will try to maintain its lead.

Rasra: Crisis on BSP's legacy

Umashankar Singh had registered consecutive victories in 2012, 2017 and 2022. After his demise on August 5, 2026, BSP faces the challenge of taking over the local leadership and political legacy. In 2024, SP got a lead of 5,117 votes in Rasra assembly constituency. It will be important for both BJP and SP to challenge the old influence of BSP here.

Belthara Road: Challenge of saving support before Hansu Ram

The reserved seat was won by SP's Gorakh Paswan in 2012, BJP's Dhananjay Kanojia in 2017 and SubhaSP's Hansu Ram in 2022. In 2024, SP got a lead of 9,700 votes. Hansu Ram, who joined NDA after winning the elections with SP alliance, will face the challenge of maintaining his support base in the changed equation. It will be important for BJP and SubhaSP to end SP's lead.

Big challenge before BJP and SP

In the 2027 elections, BJP will face the challenge of strengthening its influence in Ballia, taking advantage of Narad Rai's political power and ending SP's assembly constituency-wise lead. At the same time, it will be important for SP to convert its lead in 2024 into victory in the assembly elections, keep its old support base strong and stop the growing political influence of BJP.

BSP faces the challenge of taking over the legacy of Umashankar Singh in Rasra and SubhaSP faces the challenge of maintaining its support in the changed alliance. The 2027 elections on seven seats of Ballia can become a battle of prestige for SP and BJP. The changing results in the last elections show that no party has permanent dominance in the district. Narad Rai's entry into BJP, BSP's leadership crisis in Rasra and change of alliance of SubhaSP are likely to affect the electoral mathematics.
