Hong Kong: Veteran India fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar will captain India at the Hong Kong Sixes 2026with Krunal Pandya, Nitish Rana, Rahul Tewatia and several IPL stars named in the seven-member squad for the fast-paced tournament.
The competition will be held from October 30 to November 1 at the Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground in Hong Kong. India’s squad brings together international experience, attacking batters, all-rounders and specialist bowling options for a format in which teams have only six players on the field at a time.
The squad also includes Shashank Singh, Rahul Tripathi and left-arm pacer T Natarajan. With the exception of Shashank, all members of the squad have represented India at the international level.
Bhuvneshwar’s appointment gives India an experienced leader who has played extensively in international cricket and the Indian Premier League. His ability to swing the new ball could also prove valuable in a format where matches can change rapidly.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar brings experience
Bhuvneshwar Kumar will lead the Indian side after a long career across international and franchise cricket.
The right-arm seamer has represented India in all three international formats and has been particularly effective with the new ball. His experience of handling pressure in short-format cricket could be important in the Hong Kong Sixes, where there is little time for teams to settle into a game.
The format places a premium on attacking cricket, with batters expected to score quickly and bowlers required to make an immediate impact.
Bhuvneshwar’s experience could therefore extend beyond his bowling role, with his leadership expected to be an important part of India’s campaign.
Krunal Pandya adds all-round versatility
Krunal Pandya is another experienced name in the Indian squad.
The left-handed all-rounder can contribute with both bat and ball, giving India flexibility in a format where squad sizes are considerably smaller than in conventional cricket.
Krunal’s ability to change his role according to the match situation could be particularly useful in the Sixes format. He can provide additional batting depth while also offering a left-arm spin option.
His experience in the IPL and international cricket adds further depth to a squad designed to cover multiple aspects of the game.
Strong finishing options in the squad
India have also selected several players known for their aggressive batting and finishing ability.
Nitish Rana brings experience of batting in the top and middle order and has been a prominent performer in domestic and franchise cricket.
Shashank Singh has established a reputation as a powerful finisher in the IPL, particularly for his ability to score quickly in the closing stages of an innings.
Rahul Tewatia is another player accustomed to finishing matches under pressure. His experience in the IPL has included several high-impact performances in situations where teams require quick runs.
With only six players on the field, such finishing ability could be especially valuable in Hong Kong.
Rahul Tripathi and Natarajan complete squad
Rahul Tripathi provides another attacking batting option.
Known for his aggressive approach, Tripathi can increase the scoring rate from the top or middle order and has extensive experience in the IPL.
T Natarajan adds a specialist left-arm pace option to the squad. His ability to bowl yorkers and variations at the death gives India another weapon in a format where conceding boundaries can quickly change the outcome of a match.
The combination of Bhuvneshwar and Natarajan gives India two experienced pace options, while Krunal provides an additional spin option.
Six players make the format different
The Hong Kong Sixes is unlike conventional international cricket because only six players from each team take the field.
The reduced number of players creates a fast-paced contest in which every player is expected to contribute. Batters have limited time to build an innings, while bowlers have little margin for error.
The format also places greater emphasis on athleticism and fielding because there are fewer players covering the playing area.
For India, the selected squad combines players accustomed to high-pressure T20 cricket with specialists who can adapt to the shorter format.
India return after 2025 campaign
India will return to the Hong Kong Sixes after participating in the 2025 edition.
The Indian side began its 2025 campaign with a two-run victory over Pakistan under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. However, India subsequently lost its remaining matches and exited the competition before the later stages.
The 2026 squad will therefore look to go deeper into the tournament and challenge for the title.
The presence of several established IPL names gives India considerable experience of short-format cricket, although the Sixes format presents a different tactical challenge.
Pakistan enter as defending champions
Pakistan will enter the 2026 tournament as the defending champions.
They won the 2025 edition after defeating debutants Kuwait in the final, securing their sixth Hong Kong Sixes title.
Pakistan’s record makes them one of the teams to watch in the latest edition, while India’s return adds further interest to the competition.
The tournament will feature eight major cricketing nations and four Associate Memberscreating a 12-team field for the three-day event.
Hong Kong Cricket welcomes India’s participation
Anuraag Bhatnagar, Director of Marketing and Commercial at Cricket Hong Kong, China, welcomed India’s participation and thanked the Indian cricket authorities for their support in assembling the squad.
He described the Indian team as potentially one of the strongest sides to have represented India in the history of the Sixes tournament.
Bhatnagar also said India’s participation could significantly increase viewership and provide further recognition for the long-running tournament.
The involvement of a high-profile Indian squad is expected to add to the tournament’s visibility, particularly given the popularity of the selected players among IPL audiences.
What to expect from India’s campaign
India’s squad offers a combination of experience and attacking ability.
Bhuvneshwar provides leadership and new-ball expertise, while Krunal offers an all-round option. Rana, Shashank, Tewatia and Tripathi provide multiple attacking batting choices, with Natarajan strengthening the bowling unit.
The biggest challenge will be adapting those skills to a format where there is almost no room for a slow start.
With only six players on the field and matches designed around rapid scoring, India’s ability to make quick tactical decisions could determine how far the team progresses.
The Hong Kong Sixes 2026 will run from October 30 to November 1with the tournament promising three days of short, high-intensity cricket.
For Bhuvneshwar Kumar and his experienced Indian squad, the objective will be to improve on last year’s campaign and make a serious push for the Hong Kong Sixes title.
