Big decision of Central Government: Ban on 16 FDC medicines, know what is the whole matter
New Delhi. The Central Government has taken an important decision keeping in mind the drug safety and quality. The government has banned the manufacturing, sale and distribution of 16 fixed dose combination (FDC) medicines. This step has been taken on those medicines, about which sufficient evidence has not been found at the scientific level that they are completely safe and useful for the patients.
What are FDC medicines?
FDC i.e. Fixed Dose Combination are those medicines, which contain a mixture of two or more medicines in a single tablet, capsule or syrup. Their objective is to give the patient the benefits of several medicines simultaneously, so that the treatment can be easier. However, experts believe that not every drug combination is necessary or safe. If two or more medicines are mixed without scientific basis, it can increase the risk of harm to the patient instead of benefit.
Why did the government impose the ban?
The Central Government has taken this decision under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. This decision has been implemented following the recommendations of the expert committees and the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB). The investigation found that there is not enough clinical evidence available for the combination of these 16 FDC drugs. That is, their effect and safety have not been completely proven scientifically.
Which major medicines are banned?
The FDC drugs that have been banned by the government include many important combinations, such as Aspirin + Etoheptazine, Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase, Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase + Lactobacillus Sporogenes, Dicyclomine + Paracetamol + Clidinium Bromide + Chlordiazepoxide, Paracetamol + Lignocaine, Gliclazide + Chromium Picolinate, Cefadroxyl + Probenecid, Cefuroxime + Serratiopeptidase, apart from many aloe vera based cosmetic and health products. Combinations are also included in this list, such as medicines mixed with Vitamin E, Jojoba Oil and Orange Oil.
