Kutch Copper Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited, has prepared a major plan to make its operations more environment friendly. The company is committed to reducing carbon emissions, saving water and improving resource efficiency at its copper refinery in Mundra, Gujarat. 115 megawatt (MW) renewable energy Is planning to integrate into its operations.
Presently the company is operating a copper smelter with an annual capacity of 5,00,000 tonnes, which is planned to be increased to 1 million (10 lakh) tonnes per annum in the future. After this expansion, it will become the largest single-location custom smelter of its kind in the world. In its first sustainability report, the company has clarified that as the demand for metals is increasing rapidly due to energy transition investments, electric mobility and power transmission, incorporating environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards into their business is a priority.
Sharing its strategy, Kutch Copper said that this 115 MW renewable energy plan is an important step towards rapidly reducing their carbon footprint and achieving their long-term decarbonization goals. Copper is a vital material for clean energy technology and electrification, which is at the center of global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, the company is treating 99.8 percent of its sulfur emissions while adopting global standards in environmental management and pollution control.
The company has also taken exemplary steps on the water conservation front. Kutch Copper operates on almost 100 per cent desalinated water and is adopting a ‘zero-liquid-discharge’ approach to minimize its dependence on freshwater. Adani Group has promised to invest US $ 1.2 billion for this entire project. The Group believes that this strong investment in the domestic copper industry and green infrastructure will play a vital role in India’s national goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2070.
