Why is the police collecting old documents?
As per the instructions of the Health Department, the process of verification of birth and death registration documents is said to have started. As part of the investigation, old registers preserved in various Municipal Corporation and Panchayat offices are being collected. Various birth and death registration registers preserved since 1990 are being collected. It will be basically verified whether there is any discrepancy or irregularity in the issue of birth certificate by examining the statements and documents of the administration.
What is the situation in Katwa Municipal Corporation?
Katwa Municipal Corporation official Chanchal Kumar Mandal said, following the instructions of the Health Department, the police is checking the documents. The process of applying and giving certificates through the online portal will continue as per the Municipal Corporation sources. However, the daily services of the common people will not be completely stopped even if the old documents are taken for police investigation. As per the administration, once the necessary work of investigation and collection of documents is completed, the documents will be returned and the services will return to normal.
Campaign in multiple Panchayats in Kalnat
Similar document verification work has started in various village panchayats of Katwar as well as Kalna assembly. Police of Kalna police station is said to have reached several Panchayet offices including the market place of Kalna-1 block and collected the registers of birth and death registration. Administrative sources claim that not only in East Vandham, the process of verification of similar documents is going on in different places of the state. Old registers and documents preserved in the concerned office are being collected for the purpose of investigation.
Why questions about SIR and OBC certificates?
Administrative sources claim that such a comprehensive investigation has started after various complaints regarding the birth certificate issue came to light recently. Especially the issue of use of birth certificate in making SIR process and OBC certificate is coming to light and the authenticity of the documents and the process is being examined. However, the final result of the investigation has not been published yet. There have been irregularities in a particular Municipal Council or Panchayat and nothing has been formally informed by the administration. Therefore, until the investigation is completed, it would not be appropriate to view this operation as evidence of any specific irregularity.
What does the administration know about the service?
Even if there are temporary problems at some places due to document collection, the administration has given a message to the general public not to panic. While the online service is operational, the process of applying for and providing necessary birth and death certificates will continue. As a result, police investigation regarding the old register is ongoing and the citizen service is not completely closed.
