The Union government is exploring the possibility of convening a special session of Parliament next month to consider legislation linked to delimitation and women’s reservation, according to a report citing people aware of the developments.
The government has reportedly begun discussions with some members of the National Democratic Alliance over the proposed legislative agenda. The proposed measures are linked to the implementation of women’s reservation and changes associated with delimitation.
The issue of delimitation has political significance because changes in the allocation of Lok Sabha seats could affect the representation of states. Women’s reservation legislation, meanwhile, provides for reserving one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, with its implementation linked to a future delimitation exercise.
The government has not, in the cited report, formally announced the dates or final legislative agenda for such a special session. The proposal therefore remains under consideration.
