Centre Grants Z-Category Security to AAP Leader Raghav Chadha Amid Heightened Threat Perception:
In a significant move following a fresh security assessment, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially granted Z-category security to senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha. This elite security cover will be provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and will be applicable across the country.
Increased Security Protocol and Bodyguards
Under the new Z-category protocol, Chadha will be protected by a dedicated team of approximately 22 to 33 armed personnel. The security detail typically includes commandos, escort vehicles, and round-the-clock protection at his residence and during his travels. This decision marks a major escalation from his previous security arrangements and ensures a high-level shield against potential threats.
The Shift from State to Central Protection
The decision comes months after a political stir regarding the MP’s safety. Previously, the Punjab government had provided Chadha with high-level security; however, that cover was reportedly withdrawn or scaled back earlier. Following the withdrawal of state-level protection, a comprehensive review was conducted by central intelligence agencies. The findings of this threat-assessment report prompted the MHA to intervene and provide a central security net.
Rising Threats Against High-Profile Leaders
Sources suggest that the intelligence reports highlighted a “credible threat” to the AAP leader, necessitating the deployment of central commandos. Chadha, who is often seen as a key strategist for the Aam Aadmi Party and a prominent face in the Rajya Sabha, has been active in high-stakes political environments, which often increases the risk profile of such public figures.
What is Z-Category Security?
The Z-category is the third-highest level of security in India, following Z+ and SPG (Special Protection Group). It is reserved for individuals who face significant threats to their life due to their public position or activities. With this move, Chadha joins an elite group of protected political leaders, ensuring that his security remains consistent regardless of which state he is visiting.
