New Delhi .Constipation is generally considered to be a problem related to the digestive system, but long-term constipation has also been linked to other health conditions in the body. Some research has revealed a relationship between chronic constipation and skin problems. However, this does not mean that constipation directly causes skin disease in every person.
In case of constipation, bowel movements may become less or difficult. Problems like heaviness in the stomach, discomfort and gas may also appear along with it. If this problem persists for a long time then it becomes necessary to identify its root causes. Diet, lack of water, lack of physical activity and some other factors can play a role in constipation.
Some studies have found important indications regarding the relationship between constipation and skin. A study conducted on data of more than 170 thousand people in Taiwan found that people suffering from constipation had a higher risk of eczema than other people. In the report this risk has been stated to be almost double.
However, such studies do not confirm any direct cause. That is, it cannot be said with certainty that constipation causes eczema. There may be several biological and lifestyle factors behind the link between the two problems. Therefore, in case of skin problems, it is not appropriate to consider constipation as the sole reason.
Studies are continuously being conducted in medical research regarding the relationship between intestine and skin. Both the digestive system and skin are important parts of the body's defense system. Factors such as changes in gut health, inflammation and imbalances in the microbiome can affect the body's immune response, which may also be reflected in the skin in some people.
Some people may experience rashes, itching, dryness or other changes on the skin during digestive upset. People also often associate problems like acne and swelling under the eyes with poor digestion. However, there can be many other causes for these conditions, so the cause of a skin problem cannot be determined based on stomach problems alone.
Improving everyday lifestyle is considered important to prevent constipation. Including enough fiber in the diet, drinking adequate amounts of water, and maintaining regular physical activity can be helpful for digestive health. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other fiber-rich foods can be part of a balanced diet.
For some people, probiotic-rich foods may also be beneficial for gut health. However, every person's digestive needs are different. In case of persistent constipation, it is better to get its causes investigated rather than relying only on home remedies.
If constipation persists for a long time, blood appears in the stool, unexplained weight loss, severe stomach pain or sudden change in bowel movements, it is important to seek medical advice. Similarly, if symptoms like rash, itching, swelling or eczema persist on the skin, a dermatologist should be consulted.
Research on the relationship between constipation and skin is still ongoing. Available evidence suggests that there may be a link between gut and skin health, but it would not be scientifically correct to link every skin problem to constipation. A balanced diet, adequate water, regular activity, and medical advice when needed are important for both digestive and skin health.
