Chini Ka Rate Today: Sugar prices are skyrocketing across the country. In the last 17 days, the price of sugar (Sugar Price Today) has increased by Rs 19. At the same time, sugar has become costlier by 40% in the last two months. Modi government has taken action to stop the huge increase in the price of sugar. The Modi government at the Center has made the import of sugar tax free. Due to this decision of the government, sugar may become cheaper in the coming days. This discount will last till 31st October. Currently, sugar is being sold in retail at around ₹ 55 per kg.
Here, Modi government is taking swift action to control the price of sugar. On Thursday, while the government approved the import of 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar, it also gave strict instructions to the mills. Despite this, on August 20 itself, a rise of up to Rs 525 was recorded in the wholesale price of sugar. The retail price also reached Rs 55 per kg. The prices of branded packaged sugar have reached Rs 80 per kg.
According to the notification issued by the Central Government, a tariff rate quota of 10 lakh metric tonnes will be applicable. Under this quota, raw sugar can be imported duty free up to the prescribed quantity. For this, the conditions prescribed in the notification will have to be followed. A condition has also been imposed to sell the sugar prepared from imported raw sugar in the domestic market by 31 October 2026. The government issued an order on Wednesday to control the record prices of sugar. According to the order, dealers who use more than 10 metric tons of sugar every month cannot keep the stock for more than 15 days. According to the notification, this order will come into effect from September 1 and will remain effective till November 30.
Sugar export will be banned till 30 September 2026
To avoid shortage of sugar in the country, the government has completely banned its export. This ban will remain in force till 30 September 2026. The government has put sugar in the completely banned category, that is, now no trader will be able to sell sugar outside the country without the permission of the government.
Sugar became costlier by Rs 19 in 17 days
Let us tell you that on July 31, the wholesale price of sugar was Rs 44 per kg. Whereas in retail it was being sold at Rs 56 to Rs 46 per kg. Whereas on August 1, the wholesale price reached Rs 46 per kg. The retail price reached Rs 47. On August 2, the wholesale price was Rs 49 and the retail price was Rs 50. Whereas on August 20, the wholesale price increased to Rs 60 per kg and the retail price reached Rs 65 per kg. The average mill price of sugar across the country reached an all-time high of Rs 5,400-5,500 per quintal.
The price was this much a year ago
A year ago the mill price was Rs 3,900 per quintal. This shows that there has been a huge increase on an annual basis. With the increase in mill rates, the average retail price of sugar also rose by 13 per cent to Rs 52.3 per kg on August 18 from Rs 46.34 per kg a year ago, according to Consumer Affairs Ministry data.
