Renowned lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar on Sunday shared his views on freedom of expression and approach to cinema. After being felicitated by a leading jewelery brand in Kolkata, she candidly discussed with journalists the controversies surrounding the film ‘Dhurandhar’ and the political scenario of West Bengal.
When asked about his recent film ‘Dhurandhar’ being called a ‘propaganda’ film, Akhtar said that everyone has the right to express their views.
He said, ‘I don’t know what you mean by ‘propaganda’ films. I liked ‘Dhurandhar’ very much, it is an excellent film. He also said that every story reflects some point of view, but does a story become propaganda simply because its plot is not suitable for some audiences? Everyone has the right to express their views.
Akhtar also said that it is the duty of every filmmaker to depict the truth.
Javed Akhtar’s opinion on West Bengal politics
When asked about the possible outcome of the West Bengal Assembly elections, Akhtar said, ‘Governments keep coming and going; Government is needed to run the society. But Bengal is known for its history and literature, which has no connection with any political party.
Commenting on BJP coming to power in 2014, Akhtar said change was bound to happen. He said, ‘Sometimes changes are undesirable and sometimes desirable. I believe that the young generation is better than my generation. They will make this society much better.
This statement of Javed Akhtar has come at a time when there is a heated debate going on in the country on the combination of art and politics. His comments not only support freedom of expression but also give a message to the society to rise above the election noise and focus on cultural values.
