New Delhi, August 23 (IANS). Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Central Institute of Orthopedics (CIO) of Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi have made major achievements in the direction of modern treatment. The hospital successfully performed its first robot-assisted total knee replacement (TKR) on August 22.
Robot-assisted orthopedic surgery at CIO has been initiated with the leadership, support and encouragement of Dr. Kavita Sharma, Director, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital. This initiative will further strengthen advanced and technology-based orthopedic care in the government health system.
This surgery was done by Prof. Director of Central Institute of Orthopedics. Done under the guidance of Dr. Sumit Sural. The team that performed the surgery was led by Dr. Bhagwati Prasad Sharma, Consultant Professor and Unit Head.
This historic surgery was done completely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This operation was performed on a 75 year old economically weaker male patient in this Central Government Hospital.
The orthopedic team was led by Dr. Bhagwati Prasad Sharma, along with Dr. Dhruve Maini and Dr. Kartik Yadav. The anesthesia team was led by Dr. Sushil Guria. Operation theater's nursing staff sisters Rekha and Ritika and technical staff Vijender's team also provided necessary support.
A major feature of the new robotic system is that it is an upgradeable platform, which gives scope for expanding the range of robot-assisted orthopedic surgeries at CIO. This platform can help in surgeries like total knee replacement, partial knee replacement and hip joint replacement
In the future, with technology and software upgrades, robot-assisted spine surgery will also be possible through this platform, which will further expand the scope of advanced surgical services for patients.
Robot-assisted surgery allows precise pre-operative planning and precision during surgery, especially in implant position and alignment. The addition of this technology to CIO will increase access to advanced orthopedic surgery for future patients.
Most importantly, the availability of this technology under Ayushman Bharat in the Central Government Hospital will also enable patients from economically weaker sections to get advanced robotic orthopedic care, thereby further strengthening equitable health care.
The success of the first robot-assisted TKR is a significant step forward in advancing technology-enabled orthopedic services at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital.
