Bhangarh Fort, located in Alwar district of Rajasthan, is one of the most famous historical sites of India. This fort is known for its beautiful architecture as well as mysterious stories and scary tales. It is often ranked among the “scariest places” in India, although many of the stories behind it are based on folklore.
History of Bhangarh Fort
Bhangarh Fort was built by Raja Bhagwan Das of Amer in the 16th century. Later his son Madho Singh developed it. It was once a prosperous and beautiful city, where markets, temples, mansions and royal palaces existed.
The remains of several historical buildings can still be seen in the fort complex, including:

- Temple
- market structures
- Entrance gates and massive walls are included.
Why is Bhangarh called scary?
The most famous story related to Bhangarh is related to a Tantrik and Princess Ratnavati. According to the folk tale, a Tantrik loved the princess, but his love was not accepted. It is said that he cursed the fort, after which Bhangarh fell into ruins. According to another belief, a monk had put a condition during the construction of the fort that the shadow of the palace should not reach his ashram. When the palace was built higher and the shadow reached there, the city was destroyed due to the curse of the sage. However, these stories have no historical evidence and are mainly considered to be part of local folklore.
Why the ban on entry at night?
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has declared Bhangarh Fort as a protected monument. Tourists are allowed to go here only from sunrise to sunset. The reason for entry being restricted at night is said to be security. Deserted areas, forests and presence of wild animals are also considered to be a reason behind this.
Architecture of Bhangarh
Despite the horror stories, Bhangarh is also famous for its magnificent architecture. This fort built amidst the Aravalli hills is a great example of Rajasthani architecture. Tourists coming here can get an idea of the prosperity of that period by seeing the old temples, broken palaces and huge walls of the fort.
Is it really haunted by ghosts?
From a scientific point of view, no evidence of any kind of supernatural activity has been found in Bhangarh. Experts believe that horror stories often make a historical place mysterious and popular. Today Bhangarh Fort is a unique blend of history, architecture and folklore. This is the reason why every year a large number of tourists reach here and experience seeing this mysterious fort with their own eyes.
