Vegetables helpful in protecting against intestinal cancer
If you frown after hearing the name of cabbage, broccoli or cabbage, then you should pay attention to this. Consumption of these vegetables can be helpful in protecting from serious diseases like cancer. Recently, a study conducted by Britain's Francis Crick Institute has shown that these green vegetables are effective in protecting against intestinal cancer.
Consuming green leafy vegetables like cabbage and broccoli helps keep the intestines healthy and reduces the risk of intestinal cancer. This information has come to light in a new research. Experiments conducted on rats found that rats fed a diet containing indole 3 carbinol (I3C) had reduced inflammation and cancer development in the intestines. Cabbage and broccoli contain the presence of I3C, which activates a specific protein, the acyl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), thereby protecting against intestinal cancer.
The AhR acts as an environmental sensor and signals the immune system and intestinal epithelial cells to avoid inflammation, as well as provide protection against intestinal bacteria.
Helpful in preventing tumor growth
“When mice with cancer were fed a diet rich in I3C, they had a reduction in the number of tumors,” said Amina Meteji, from the Francis Crick Institute in Britain, who led the study.
This study has been published in the journal Immunity.
Consuming walnuts is also beneficial
A study conducted by the University of Illinois in May 2018 reported that the fiber present in walnuts increases the number of 'good bacteria' in the intestine and reduces the production of bile and acids. This reduces the problem of swelling and irritation in the intestinal cells, which also reduces the risk of cancer. Therefore, consuming a handful of walnuts daily can be beneficial.
