Islamabad: The body of veteran mountaineer Nirmal Purja ‘Nims Dai’ has been recovered three days after he was hit by an avalanche at Broad Peak in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Rescue teams found his body at an altitude of about 5,700 metres.
According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, ground rescue teams have reached the location on Broad Peak where Purja’s body was found. Three other bodies have also been located in the same area, but their identities are not yet clear.
Operation begins after avalanche
Purja was reported missing after an avalanche on Broad Peak. A rescue operation was launched to find him. The operation faced difficulties due to poor weather and the high altitude.
One of the world’s leading mountaineers
Nirmal Purja was a renowned Nepali mountaineer known for his expeditions to the world’s highest peaks. He held the record for having climbed all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters. His expeditions brought him international recognition in the mountaineering world.
