New Delhi: Indian athletes have made a strong start to the Under-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championships being held in Lagos, Nigeria. India won a total of 17 medals, including four gold, on the first day of the competition.
The championship, which began on Sunday, will continue until August 14. On the first day, the Indian team won four gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals. According to the Fencing Association of India, India won at least one medal in all six individual events: saber, foil, and epee.
Nikhil Wagh won gold in men’s sabre
Nikhil Wagh strengthened India’s tally by winning the gold medal in the men’s sabre event. Lakshya Badsar secured the silver medal, while Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba took bronze.
Tejas Patil won silver in foil.
Tejas Patil won the silver medal in the men’s foil event. Hemesh Sansam took the bronze.
Lokesh Vemani won the silver medal in the men’s epee event, while Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbakesh won the bronze medals.
Joyce Ashita wins gold in women’s foil
In the women’s foil event, Joice Ashita produced a brilliant performance to win the gold medal. Kanagalaxmi won the silver.
Prachi Lohan won the gold medal for India in the women’s epee, while Nivedita Nair and Anupriya won the bronze medals.
Jefferlin wins gold in women’s sabre
In the women’s sabre event, Jefferlin won the gold medal, while Akharhi and Shreya Gupta took the silver and bronze medals respectively.
India’s presence in all six individual events
The depth of the Indian fencing team can be gauged from the results of the first day. India won at least one medal in all six individual events across the men’s and women’s categories of sabre, foil, and epee.
The ongoing competition in Lagos will continue till August 14 and there are still hopes of Indian players winning medals in the future.
