Kanpur. To curb road accidents and ensure adherence to traffic rules, Kanpur Commissionerate Police launched an intensive campaign on national highways and major routes. During the campaign, action was taken against those driving at high speed and violating traffic rules.
According to the traffic police, to reduce road accidents on National Highway-34, policemen have been put on duty by installing barriers at eight places. Along with this, three interceptor mobiles have been deployed every 20 kilometers on NH-34 for effective action against speeding vehicles.
In the action taken on September 15, overspeed challans were issued to a total of 76 vehicles including four trucks, one bus and 71 four-wheelers/two-wheelers on National Highway-34. Whereas on National Highway-19, action was taken against 147 four-wheeler/two-wheeler vehicles for overspeeding. Challans of 56 vehicles were also issued at Ganga Barrage. Thus, action was taken against a total of 279 vehicles on three major routes.
The traffic police has appealed to the drivers to follow the prescribed speed limit, compulsorily use helmet and seat belt while driving and follow the traffic signals. Police have also appealed to avoid driving on the wrong side and always overtake from the right side.
The police especially appealed not to drive under the influence of alcohol and said that following traffic rules is necessary not only to avoid challan but also to protect one's own life and that of others. During the campaign, the police also made the drivers aware about road safety.
