New Delhi: A statement that shocked the football world. Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, has hinted that the 2026-27 season could be his last in professional football.
"want to leave a great legacy"
In an interview given to Vogue magazine, Ronaldo said, "This is probably my last year in football, and I want to leave a great legacy." He has not yet announced his official retirement, but it is clear from the talks that he is at the last stage of his career.
Ronaldo still has a big milestone left. He has scored 976 goals in 1,330 matches for club and country. He is just 24 goals away from the magical figure of 1,000 goals.
Storm in Al-Nasr also
Ronaldo's form for Saudi club Al-Nassr is still amazing. He scored 28 goals in the Saudi Pro League last season and finished third among the top scorers. He has 39 goals to his name in all competitions.
His career is no less than a film story. Starting with Sporting CP, then Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, United again and now Al-Nassr since 2023.
The statistics speak for themselves – 450 goals for Real Madrid, 145 goals for United, 138 goals for Portugal. Along with 5 Ballon d'Or, 5 Champions League and Euro title for Portugal.
What after football?
For the first time, Ronaldo is speaking openly about what he will do after retirement. He said, "I have planned my entire future. There's a lot to keep busy. Football leaves a big void, so it has to be filled in different ways."
He has no interest in coaching. In an interview given to NOW he clearly said, "I am not thinking of becoming the coach of the first team or any team. This is not even in my mind." Rather he wants to become the owner of the club. In 2023 itself he had said, "I don't rule out the possibility of becoming the owner of the club."
After retirement, he wants to travel more and play his favorite racquet sport paddle. Also spending time with Georgina Rodriguez. Both of them recently got married in Cascais, Portugal. He said, "It has been a journey of 25 years, a lot of sacrifices have been made. Now we have to enjoy it."
Last goal of 1,000 goals
At present Ronaldo's entire focus is on the pitch. 24 more goals are needed to reach 1,000 goals. Will he be able to achieve this milestone before retiring – this is the biggest question now. The date has not been decided, but from his gestures it seems that the 2026-27 season could be CR7's last dance.
