CWG 2026: Dilip Gavit wins ‘golden’ race in Glasgow, creates history by winning gold medal

New Delhi: Indian para-athlete Dilip Gavit delivered a stellar performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding another gold medal to his country’s tally. He clocked 10.71 seconds to win the men’s 100m T47 gold medal. This time was his season best and a new record. His historic victory bolstered India’s medal campaign.

India gets double gift of gold and silver

Shortly after Dilip Gavit’s impressive victory, India’s Mohammed Basil Morsinganakath also performed brilliantly. He won the silver medal with a time of 10.83 seconds. Having two Indian athletes reach the podium in the same event is considered a major achievement for Indian para-athletics.

This victory marked India’s third gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila Dhankhar have also previously won gold medals. India now ranks among the top 10 nations in the medal tally with three gold, nine silver, and three bronze medals.

Gold medal dedicated to Guru

After the victory, Dilip Gavit credited his coach Vaijnath Kale for his success. He said that the start was a bit slow, but he later picked up the pace and won.

Dilip said that his main event is the 400 meters, but he also thoroughly enjoyed the 100 meters. He explained that he comes from a small village in Maharashtra’s Nashik district and previously worked as a farmer. His coach recognized his talent and brought him to Nashik for training and supported him in every way. On the occasion of Guru Purnima, he dedicated this gold medal to his guru.

Journey from struggle to success

Coach Vaijnath Kale said he recognized Dilip’s running potential during his school days. Initially, he had to convince Dilip’s parents to let him train. He also said that due to the lack of proper medical facilities in the rural area, Dilip’s left hand had to be amputated, but he never gave up.

Dilip became an inspiration for the country

Dilip Gavit’s victory is not just a gold medal, but an example of struggle, hard work, and self-confidence. Overcoming limited resources and difficult circumstances, he raised the Indian flag on the world stage. His achievement will serve as a source of inspiration for generations of athletes to come.
