New Delhi, 16 September 2026: Delhi has emerged as the best performing Union Territory in terms of adoption of electric mobility in NITI Aayog's 'India Electric Mobility Index-2025'. After this comes Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chandigarh and Goa. The index was released today by NITI Aayog in New Delhi, detailing the policy framework and implementation outcomes for e-mobility at the sub-national level.
NITI Aayog member Rajiv Gauba had said that the transition towards electric mobility is important from economic, environmental and strategic point of view for the goal of 'Developed India 2047'. Mr Gauba had noted that by 2040, electric vehicles would account for 40 per cent of all new car sales. He mentioned that the highest score achieved by states and union territories in 2025 was 84, which was 77 in 2024.
The India Electric Mobility Index evaluates progress in transportation electrification, charging infrastructure and electric vehicle research and innovation based on 16 parameters.
