Delhi mattress shop worker stabbed to death after workplace dispute; co-worker arrested
A 38-year-old worker was allegedly stabbed to death by his co-worker following a dispute at a mattress-making shop in North Delhi’s Mukherji Nagar area, police said on Monday. The accused has been arrested and a murder case has been registered.
According to Delhi Police, a PCR call regarding a stabbing incident was received at Mukherji Nagar Police Station earlier in the day. Police personnel immediately rushed to the reported location at H-16, Hudson Line. By the time officers reached the spot, the injured man had already been shifted to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial (BJRM) Hospital by a PCR van.
During the preliminary inquiry, police identified the victim as Dilbahar, 38, a resident of the Patel Chest area of Delhi. Investigators said he was employed at a mattress-making shop where the incident took place.
Police officials stated that the victim had reportedly become involved in an altercation with a co-worker identified as Ashfaque alias Shahzad, 42, also a resident of Patel Chest. According to the initial investigation, the dispute arose over what police described as a trivial issue during working hours.
The argument allegedly escalated into a violent confrontation. Investigators said the accused attacked Dilbahar multiple times using a pair of scissors, causing severe injuries. Colleagues and local residents reportedly alerted emergency services following the assault.
The injured worker was transported to BJRM Hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival. Medical examination and post-mortem procedures are expected to form a key part of the investigation as authorities seek to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the death.
Delhi Police confirmed that the accused, Ashfaque alias Shahzad, was apprehended shortly after the incident. Police teams conducted initial questioning and secured evidence from the scene. The alleged weapon used in the attack is also being examined as part of the investigation.
A case of murder has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators are recording statements from witnesses, co-workers and other individuals connected to the case. Police are also reviewing the sequence of events that led to the fatal altercation.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about workplace disputes turning violent and the need for conflict resolution mechanisms in labour-intensive sectors. While the motive currently appears linked to a personal quarrel, investigators have not ruled out examining other aspects of the relationship between the victim and the accused.
Police officials said the investigation remains ongoing and additional details will emerge after forensic examination and witness testimonies are completed. The accused is expected to be produced before a court in accordance with legal procedures.
Authorities have assured that all aspects of the case will be thoroughly investigated as they work to establish the full circumstances behind the fatal attack.
